On the 1st Day of Christmas...Advent Calanders!

Advent Calenders originated in Germany and date back to the late 1800's as a way to count down the 24 days until Christmas, starting with December 1st.  This is a picture of my childhood Advent calender my mom made. Too bad I totally suck at taking pictures, because it's really cute!  It was the first Christmas decoration we put up, and I anticipated every morning when we would put a new ornament on the tree.  If you don't have one, Advent calenders are a wonderful gift to give to your family.  Your kids will love them, and its a special heirloom your family can have for generations to come.  So my advice?  Take your time, and create an entirely homemade one, a single ornament at a time.  Even if you only get part of it done the 1st year, take your time and create something meaningful.

This past weekend we visited my good friend Nikole and her family in Santa Barbara.  Nikole was in the process of making an Advent calender for her family, and she asked me for a little advice.  Well, advice turned into a little help.  Nikole lives up on a ranch in Santa Barbara, and getting to the craft store was not an option.  Luckily she had some craft supplies and a good neighbor to borrow glue from.  We used what we had, and got the ball rolling!  No, she probably won't finish it this year, but it's a start.  Cute, isn't it.
